Basmala

The Basmala (Arabic: بَسْمَلَة ‎, basmalah), also known by its incipit Bi-smi llāh ( بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ , "In the name of Allah "), [1] (or Classical Arabic Tasmiyah ( تَسْمِيَّة ),) is the Islamic phrase bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm i ( بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ), "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." The Basmala is used by Muslims in various contexts mostly before starting "good deeds" (for instance, during daily prayer). It is used in over half of the constitutions of countries where Islam is the official religion or more than half of the population follows Islam, usually the first phrase in the preamble, including those of Afghanistan, [2] Bahrain, [3] Bangladesh, [4] Brunei, [5] Egypt, [6] Iran, [7] Iraq, [8] Kuwait, [9] Libya, [10] Maldives, [11] Pakistan, [12] Tunisia [13] and the United Arab Emirates. [14]

It is the phrase recited before each chapter (surah) of the Qur'an – except for the ninth. [Notes 1] [15] Muslim disagreement over whether to include the Basmala within the Quranic text, reached consensus following the 1924 Cairo Edition, which included it as the first verse (āyah) of Quran chapter 1 but otherwise included it as an unnumbered line of text preceding the other relevant 112 chapters. [16]

In Arabic calligraphy, the Basmala is the most prevalent motif, even more so than the Shahadah. [ citation needed ]

The Islamic Basmala appears to be related to earlier variants of the phrase appearing in Arabian inscriptions from the 5th and 6th centuries. [17]

Using Unicode-Table

STEP 1 Go to https://unicode-table.com

STEP 2: Enter the UNICODE

I gave the codes above. I will use U+FDFD for the Basmallah (“In the name of Allah…”):

STEP 3: Copy and finally paste it where you want it

Note that you need to use Amiri font or at least Arial or Times New Roman. If you cannot see it, mark it and choose Arial. It should work.

Remark: If your system does not display Allah automatically in a nice way when you only type the letters of the word Allah, try the UNICODE as well. For Allah, it is: U+FDF2

The Arabic alphabet is known to be used by one of the most widely used languages in the world. Many scholars believe that the alphabet was created around the 4th century CE. [4] The alphabet consists of 28 letters written from right to left. Each letter can be written in four ways, depending on where the letter is placed in a sentence. These four locations are also known as initial, medial, final and isolated.

The pens used for Arabic calligraphy vary from Latin calligraphy. The tools used for calligraphy are different assortments of pens and calligraphy ink. The most common calligraphy pen used is Qalam. [5]

Khamish Pen Edit

The Khamish Pen also known as a reed pen is used by Arab, Turkish, and Iranian calligraphers. The reed of the pen is grown along rivers. Although this pen has been used for over 500 years, preparing the pen is a lengthy process.

Bamboo pen Edit

Bamboo pens are one of the oldest pens used for calligraphy. The edge of bamboo pens allow the performance of calligraphy to be in full movement.

Java pen Edit

The Java pen is known for the tool's hardness and ability to create sharp edges. The pen is good to use for small scripts.

Handam pen Edit

The Handam pen consists of the same strength that the Java pen has. The pen is good to use for all kinds of scripts.

Celi pen Edit

The Celi pen is used for large writing in Arabic Calligraphy. These pens are made from hardwood and cut and drilled.

Popular scripts Edit

The two most popular scripts used for Arabic calligraphy are Kufic and Naskh. Kūfic was derived from Iraq and initially used for inscription on stone and metal. Naskhī originated from Mecca and Medina. The script is used as a cursive script, for example on papyrus and paper.

Other scripts Edit

The Thuluth and Nasta'liq and Diwani script are other scripts used for Arabic scripting.

The Thuluth script used during the medieval times is known as one of the oldest scripts to exist. The script was used on mosques and for Quranic text due to the appearance of the text.

The Nasta'liq script is used more for Persian than Arabic scripting. Because of the upward slant to the left, [6] the script is seen as different than the other scripts. The cursive look creates an elegant look when creating.

The Diwani Script was created during the Ottoman era. The lining and lettering of this script creates a sense of closeness when writing. Due to this reason, it's difficult to read since the letters intertwine. [6]

Some classical calligraphers:

Contemporary Edit

    (b. 1937), Turkey (b. 1939), Iran (b. 1939), Jordan , Iraq (b. 1988), United States of America Syria (1925-2004) in Iraq Iraqi-American Iraqi-French (b. 1944) (1930-1987), Pakistan (b. 1930), Sudan (b. 1952), Syria (b. 1942), Jordan (b. 1942), United States of America (b. 1934), Syria

Typography Edit

Arabic calligraphy serves as a major source of inspiration for Arabic typography. For example, the Amiri typeface is inspired by the Naskh script used at the Amiri Press in Cairo. [8]

The shift from Arabic calligraphy to Arabic typography presents technical challenges, as Arabic is essentially a cursive script with contextual shapes.

Art Edit

EL Seed, a French-Tunisian graffiti artist, makes use of Arabic calligraphy in his various art projects, in a style called calligraffiti. [9]

The Hurufiyya ( الحروفية letters) movement, since its beginnings in the early 20th century, uses the artistic manipulation of Arabic calligraphy and typography in abstraction. [10]

Taking Shape: Abstraction From the Arab World, 1950s-1980s, a 2020 installation at New York University's Grey Art Gallery, explored how Arabic calligraphy, with its ancient presence in visual art, influenced abstract art in the Arab world. [11] For Madiha Omar, the Arabic alphabet was a means of expressing a secular identity and appropriating Western painting, while Omar El-Nagdi explored the inherent divinity of Arabic calligraphy. [11]

99 Names of Allah (Al Asma Ul Husna)

And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allâh, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do.(Surat Al-A’raf 7:180)

Allâh! Lâ ilâhla illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)! To Him belong the Best Names.(Surat Taha 20:8)

He is Allâh, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names . All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.(Surat Al-Hashr 59:24)

Narrated Abu Huraira: Prophet Muhammad SAW said, “Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.”(Sahih Al-Bukhari 50:894)

Abu Huraira reported Prophet Muhammad SAW as saying: Verily, there are ninety-nine names for Allah, i.e. hundred excepting one. He who enumerates them would get into Paradise. And Hammam has made this addition on the authority of Abu Huraira who reported it from Prophet Muhammad SAW that he said: “He is Odd (one) and loves odd number.”
